10 questions to evaluate your website's performance
Your website is often the first impression your business makes. So how do you know if it’s doing its job?
Whether you're in retail, professional services, tourism, or local government, your website should do more than just exist. It should perform. That means attracting visitors, engaging them, and converting them into leads, customers, or supporters.
Here are 10 essential questions to help evaluate your website’s performance:
1. Is your website mobile-friendly?
With more than half of global web traffic coming from mobile devices, your site must look and function well on smartphones and tablets. If users have to pinch, zoom, or scroll awkwardly, you’re likely losing them.
2. Does it load quickly?
Speed matters. If your site takes more than few seconds to load, many visitors will bounce. Use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights to test your load times and identify improvements.
3. Is your message clear within the first few seconds?
When someone lands on your homepage, do they instantly understand who you are, what you offer, and why it matters? If not, you may be losing business to more direct competitors.
4. Are your calls to action (CTAs) clear and compelling?
Every page should have a clear next step, whether it’s "Contact Us," "Download the Guide," or "Request a Quote." CTAs help turn visitors into leads.
5. Is your website optimized for search engines (SEO)?
If your website doesn’t show up in search results, it might as well be invisible. Make sure your site has the right keywords, page titles, meta descriptions, and alt tags in place.
6. Are visitors engaging with your content?
Check your analytics. Are people spending time on your site? Are they clicking, reading, and navigating beyond the homepage? Low engagement often signals content or usability issues.
7. Is it easy to navigate?
A clear menu, intuitive page structure, and accessible layout go a long way in making your site user-friendly. Don’t make people hunt for information.
8. Is your branding consistent and professional?
Your website should reflect your brand, both visually and verbally. That means cohesive colours, fonts, imagery, and tone of voice that align with your printed materials and other marketing assets.
9. Are you tracking your results?
Do you know where your visitors come from? What pages perform best? Where do user drop off? Use tools like Google Analytics to understand user behaviour and adjust accordingly.
10. Is your content current and relevant?
An outdated website can erode trust. Make sure your information, photos, blog posts, and team bios are up to date. Regular updates signal that your business is active and trustworthy.
