understanding how we define stock/substrates
In the print world, the term stock or substrate refers to the material we print on, and choosing the right one is key to getting the results you want.
Stock “weight” refers to its thickness: lighter weights (like 70lb or 80lb) are great for flyers and handouts, while heavier stocks (like 100lb cover or 14pt) offer the durability needed for business cards or postcards.
Stock finish also plays a big role. Coated stocks have a smooth surface that enhances colours and images, making them ideal for brochures or marketing materials. Uncoated stocks, on the other hand, have a natural texture that’s easy to write on - perfect for letterheads, notepads, or forms.
Selecting the right substrate ensures your printed piece looks sharp, feels right, and performs exactly as intended. Not sure which to go with? We’re happy to help you find the perfect match!
